What Is Scareware?
Scareware is fake security software or fake alerts designed to frighten you into action. It might look like a real Microsoft or Apple warning. It might make sounds. It often locks your browser so you can’t close it. The goal is to make you panic — and then call a number where a scammer will charge you money to “fix” a problem that doesn’t exist.
Your computer is usually fine. The danger is the scammer you call.
What Scareware Looks Like
⚠ VIRUS ALERT: Your computer is infected with 5 viruses
“Your personal information is at risk. Call Microsoft Support immediately at 1-800-XXX-XXXX. Do NOT close this window.”
This is a typical scareware message. Notice:
- It looks official — Microsoft logo, Windows colours
- It creates urgency — “do not close this window”
- It provides a phone number (which connects to scammers)
- It may play a loud alarm sound
- Closing the browser tab makes it go away — nothing is actually wrong
