Scareware — Fake Virus Warnings Designed to Panic You Into Paying

A pop-up appears saying your computer is infected. A loud alarm plays. A phone number appears. It’s all fake — but it’s terrifying enough that many seniors call and hand over hundreds of dollars.

What Is Scareware?

Scareware is fake security software or fake alerts designed to frighten you into action. It might look like a real Microsoft or Apple warning. It might make sounds. It often locks your browser so you can’t close it. The goal is to make you panic — and then call a number where a scammer will charge you money to “fix” a problem that doesn’t exist.

Your computer is usually fine. The danger is the scammer you call.

What Scareware Looks Like

⚠ VIRUS ALERT: Your computer is infected with 5 viruses

“Your personal information is at risk. Call Microsoft Support immediately at 1-800-XXX-XXXX. Do NOT close this window.”

This is a typical scareware message. Notice:

  • It looks official — Microsoft logo, Windows colours
  • It creates urgency — “do not close this window”
  • It provides a phone number (which connects to scammers)
  • It may play a loud alarm sound
  • Closing the browser tab makes it go away — nothing is actually wrong

If You Call That Number...

1

The scammer asks to access your computer remotely to “run a diagnostic”

2

They install real malware or steal your files while pretending to fix things

3

They charge $200–$800 for fake “cleanup” software

4

They call back weeks later with new “problems” — targeting victims repeatedly
